Reading Time: 6 minutesI have lived in New Delhi for the past 24 years.
New Delhi is always on the travel freaks list or, let us consider it, everyone. Are you a travel freak? Hopefully, I will not be wrong here.
The place attracts people from all over the world, be it in New Zealand, the U.S, or any other country.
I had included the words (all over the world) because I had met international travelers in New Delhi who were required to know more & more about New Delhi.
The foreign travelers also wanted to live in New Delhi to feel the lifestyle, culture & moreover, they are willing to enjoy the happiness.
Did you know that for the last 10 Years, India has been observing an increase in foreign tourists every month of the year?
I mean, this is simply an Amazing number.
With COVID expanding out in 2020, the virus had stopped everything. As the days progressed gradually & firmly, the tourist journey began again but carefully.
India is a big country with 29 states & 9 Union territories. In terms of population, India has 133cr people and counting.“
Let us focus on our topic.
We will talk about the capital state of India, New Delhi.
In this post, I will discuss my experience of what it is like to live in New Delhi.
I had stated beneath my point of view & had divided it into steps for a more favorable perception.

What is it Like to Live in New Delhi?
If I have to answer in one word, it feels Good Amazing, Awesome, Cool. That ultimately signifies the happiness and joy to express my love & respect for the home city of New Delhi.
Often, I try to escape from where I live in New Delhi on the Weekends ? to the nearby hills. But, of course, the Mountains are also loved, but that is a different story, and we will talk about it some other time.
New Delhi does not have a perfect season in which the sightseers travel but all the season, to be honest.
The Peak Summer can sweat you hard & can dehydrate you quickly. So in that sense, winters can be said as the outsider’s most suitable time to explore & live in Delhi.
1. Time-Bounded
In some sections of the area, it is strict, and in some parts, it is like chalta h chalta h (Hindi word), which means It is okay, let it go in English. Mainly for the office-going personalities.
When you say to someone that this is a particular time and you need to reach sharp & most of the time, but if you set a limitation linked to money, time will automatically come into action. The office is a perfect example.
Suppose you arrive late, after 9 a.m. The chances are that your salary will be affected.
In the daylight, you will always find everyone moving to their destination & the limitation is making them run. Therefore, you have to set some constraints to proceed to accomplish something.
2. Crowded
That is true; Delhi is the 2nd most populated city in India with approx. 2cr people and counting.
If you do not see any crowd, you’ll get bothered about where the Delhi people had departed. (Maybe to Himachal to witness the snowfall in winters).
Delhi people love escaping to the Himalayas on the weekends, notably to Himachal and Uttarakhand. The overnight bus trip executes tasks more comfortably.

3. Quick Connectivity
The Delhi Metro is the pride of the city in transportation. With the opening of different routes and making travel convenient, the Delhi metro has become the necessary medium to move from one end to another & that too at a nominal price rate.
It’s the need of an hour to emerge from traffic jams with nominal fare and reach your marked target on time. It will result in that the Metro has become completely packed with passengers.
When COVID had knocked on the doors, the metro services stopped for about 6-7 months. After the services have continued the passenger’s count have reduced to fewer than a half. The Metro comes on track with the Agenda of following the rules of social distancing & hand sanitization.
The Delhi Metro has been a boon for the people.
The Delhi Metro can cover almost every part of Delhi.
Different lines in the Delhi Metro connect with the other sections.
4. An Easily Accessible Market
You must be living in any corner of New Delhi. You will find a street supermarket on a particular day in your area.
For e.x. – Monday market, Sunday market, Tuesday market, etc.
These markets will be within your reach in a few meters of distance or maybe just down below the balcony where you’re living. Every place has a fixed day set for the market.
I live in West Delhi, Thursday market appears every week.
An essential thing that every person sees before buying a house is the availability of markets nearby. Things will get clear when you have many choices to pick from the possible ones.
These markets bring crowds where moving without affecting anyone becomes next to impossible.
5. Entertainment
Boredom & New Delhi stay away from each other.
From the fight of the husband & wife on the streets. To the children’s masterstroke for a glass break of the house & people fighting for a gentle push or standing in the line.
Don’t be worried I am just rhyming the words around. But let me tell you a mystery, it happens.
Keeping personal matters aside, the entertainment industry in India is amongst the biggest giants of the country.
Every street has an artist who needs motivation and appreciation to move forward.
6. Believe in Savings
The majority of people highly believe in savings.
We will fight for 10 rupees with Autowala’s but are ready to pay 1000 rupees extra in buying black movie tickets.
For e.x – If you have a salary today, half of it will be spent buying something for the parents or family. And the remaining will be preserved for later use.
Hats off to the people who sacrifice their passion to better their families and parents.
7. People Willing to Help
People are willing to help you if you need any assistance in the direction.
For e.x – If you’re new in town and want to go to Connaught place by road from Moti Nagar. The people will help in guiding you.
Not only guide you, they sometimes get so involved that you can see on their faces & through their gestures that as if they come along & will drop you.
I meant this is a sweet gesture coming from an unknown city if you’re from outside Delhi & came here to explore.
Where You can live in Delhi
It will sound exciting & confusing, where one should prefer to live in Delhi.
There are two situations under this –
- If you are a foreigner and traveling to explore New Delhi on a budget for a few days
- If you’re permanently looking to live in Delhi
Let’s start pointwise –
1. If You are a Foreigner and Traveling to Explore New Delhi on a Budget
If you are focused, with a budget in mind, then Paharganj, Karol Bagh area is considered the most suitable for backpackers. That is because you will get a low-budget hotel and hostels conveniently.
Both the places would be, jammed with tourists, and the possibilities of bumping with others will increase. Just joking
It can happen.
You can spot people from various states and countries exploring life in New Delhi like you are doing.
Paharganj and Karol Bagh are amongst the most talked-about places among backpackers. And are nearby to the Railway station and the Airport too.
Paharganj – You can choose Paharganj to explore old Delhi closely by living around the area.
AND
Karol bagh– You can choose Karol Bagh if you want to explore the other side of New Delhi with events around the city.
2. If You Wanted to Permanent Live in Delhi
If you are looking for a permanent settlement, I believe you will fancy a place less packed and close to some peaceful surroundings. (Peace is nowhere, but still, you’ll be going to find some)
That was from my understanding, travel & experience –
Somehow, if you are looking to stay around a luxury lifestyle area of South Delhi, like Defence Colony, Hauz Khas, Greater Kailash, are the sections you can have a look for a settlement.
If you are looking to stay around a decent lifestyle area of West Delhi, like, Rajouri Garden, Peeragarhi, Punjabi Bagh, are the areas you can have a look for a settlement.
Conclusion
Just carry your bags, arrive in this beautiful city, and experience what it is like to live in New Delhi. Next time, you will tell someone about your journey of life in New Delhi.
